VA/DoD Best Practices
The VA and DoD have codified best practices for managing Gulf War Illness. The War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) at the Department of Veterans Affairs published a healthcare provider handout updated in 2018, covering pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
Clinical and Behavioral Interventions
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- CBT for insomnia has been examined with Gulf War veterans
- Problem-solving therapy approaches have been studied
- Telemedicine CBT delivery methods have been investigated
Mindfulness-Based Interventions
Mindfulness practices are being explored as potential treatments for alleviating GWI symptoms.Complementary and Integrative Healthcare
Studies have examined various complementary approaches:
- Exercise interventions
- Acupuncture and acupressure
- Tai-chi
- Yoga
- Specific dietary modifications
- Herbal vitamins and nutritional supplements
Other Interventions
CPAP (Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)
Studies examining the effect of CPAP on GWI symptoms.Medication Studies
Research into specific medications for symptom management.Treatment Approach Summary
There is no single treatment approach that is best or being used universally for veterans with Gulf War Illness. The multisymptomatic nature of the illness requires ongoing research to identify what might be helpful, with increasing emphasis toward incorporating a multi-treatment approach tailored to individual veteran needs.
