Overview
The Active Denial System (ADS) is a nonlethal directed energy weapon developed by Raytheon Company in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory. The system projects millimeter-wave electromagnetic energy to create an intolerable burning sensation on human skin, causing targets to move away from the beam.
Technical Specifications
- Energy Type: Millimeter-wave directed energy
- Penetration Depth: Less than 1/64 inch (approximately 0.39 mm)
- Range: Up to one kilometer
- Effect Duration: Pain ceases immediately when target exits beam path or system is deactivated
- Residual Effects: None reported in testing
Development History
Developed through a joint effort between the Air Force Research Laboratory, Marine Corps, and Raytheon Company. The technology was tested by Rich Garcia of the Air Force Research Laboratory in New Mexico, who described the sensation as feeling "like your skin is on fire" with immediate return to normal once out of beam path.
Deployment Context
ADS was under consideration for integration into Project Sheriff vehicles (Stryker, ASV, LAV) by summer 2005. The system's nonlethal nature made it particularly suitable for urban combat scenarios where minimizing civilian casualties is a priority.
