Overview
Narratives serve as the target of cognitive engagement, functioning as the narrative space within the Information Environment (IE) where ideas are received, processed, and responses nurtured. Effective narratives must be conveyed through physical, informational, and cognitive dimensions including cyber space to achieve influence.
Narrative Functions in Conflict
Identity Group Definition: Revolutionary objectives frequently define identity groups explicitly or through socio-economic/cultural framing, creating categorical distinctions that validate claims of grievance, support, and legitimacy.
Recruitment and Propaganda: Successful movements rely on narratives resonating with deep cultural, ethnic, or historical myths/memories within populations. These narratives enable recruitment, propaganda framing, and sanctification of operations against specified out-groups.
Categorical Distinctions: The more salient categorical distinctions based on cultural, ethnic, nationality, or class divisions are, the more effectively revolutionary groups can recruit, frame propaganda, and legitimize operations.
Narrative Mapping Approach
Narratives flow, intersect, and branch through time and space like subway systems. A holistic vantage point reveals that operators also exist on this narrative map, requiring understanding of how narratives shape perception before actions occur, stabilize during execution, and reinforce outcomes afterward.
SLINGSHOT Methodology: The framework proposes a systematic approach to mapping dynamic narratives in the Common Operating Picture (COP), integrating narrative-focused and action-focused communities for effective cognitive engagement.
Operational Integration
Effective cognitive engagement requires integration of narrative-focused and action-focused communities. Narratives must be less about checking responses to Joint actions and more about planning narratives that shape perception of upcoming actions, stabilize during execution, and reinforce desired outcomes afterward. This integration enables narratives to function as force-multipliers for physical actions.
