Overview
This document presents the classification framework for directed energy weapons microwave (DEWM) systems and their fundamental block diagram architectures as defined in Czech military research.
DEWM Classification System
The paper introduces a formal classification of directed energy weapons microwave systems, establishing that:
- Vircators are classified as one-shot devices capable of producing very powerful single pulses of radiation
- They operate over relatively broad bands of microwave frequencies
- The physics involves accelerating high-current electron beams against foil or grid anodes
- Space charge regions oscillate at microwave frequencies when placed in appropriately tuned resonant cavities
Block Diagram Architecture
Standard DEWM Configuration (Fig. 2)
``
Modulator → PFN → HPM ET → ANT
`
Where:
- Modulator: Primary power source for pulsed operation
- PFN (Pulse Forming Network): Shapes and stores energy for high-power pulse delivery
- HPM ET (High Power Microwave Electronic Tube): The active microwave generation element
- ANT (Antenna): Radiates the electromagnetic energy
Alternative Configuration with Primary Source (Fig. 3)
`
Primary source → Modulator → PFN → HPM ET → ANT
``
This variant includes an explicit primary current source feeding the modulator stage.
Vircator-Specific Architecture
The axial vircator design incorporates:
- Adjustable cathode-anode distance for impedance matching to pulse forming line
- Grid anode construction enabling repeated operation (vs. single-shot foil anode)
- Carbon-based electrodes: pyrolitic carbon grid, cylindrical carbon block cathode
- Vacuum pumping shelter for maintaining operational conditions
Power Supply Integration
Two distinct power architectures are documented:
| Application | Power Source | Generator Type |
|-------------|--------------|----------------|
| Electromagnetic Ammunition (DEWM) | Magneto-cumulative generator | Explosive-driven MCG |
| Weapons for Defense of Objects (WDO) | Marx generator | Capacitive discharge |
