Definition

Anomalous Health Incidents (AHI) is the U.S. government's official term for sudden onset neurological symptoms affecting government employees, military servicemembers, and their families worldwide. The term was adopted to replace "Havana Syndrome" which originated from media coverage of incidents at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba.

  • Symptoms: Vertigo, imbalance, blurry vision, tinnitus, headache, hearing loss, nausea, cognitive dysfunction
  • Onset Pattern: Sudden onset with no obvious cause
  • Geographic Scope: Documented in Austria, China, Colombia, Georgia, Germany, India, Poland, Russia, Vietnam, and the United States

Official Documentation

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) noted in its July 2024 report that "such events have affected U.S. government employees, military servicemembers, and their families in countries around the world, and are now referred to as anomalous health incidents (AHI) by the U.S. government." As of January 2024, 334 people had qualified for care in the Military Health System.
